The short answer: in Australia, a reconditioned Kia Sportage engine supplied and fitted commonly costs between $5,000 and $8,500. Where you land in that range depends on which of the Sportage’s engines you have, what condition the ancillaries are in, and whether the failure damaged anything else. Supply only, our reconditioned Sportage engines are priced at $4,200 for the 2.0 GDI and $5,999 for the 2.4 GDI on a changeover basis. This guide breaks it down engine by engine so you know what a fair quote looks like.

First, which Sportage engine do you have?

The Sportage has used several petrol engines in Australia, and the cost depends on which one is under the bonnet:

  • Sportage SL (2011-2013): 2.0 litre G4KD or 2.4 litre G4KE (Theta II MPI)
  • Sportage SL (2014-2015): 2.0 litre G4NC (Nu GDI)
  • Sportage QL (2016-2021): 2.0 litre G4NA (Nu MPI) or 2.4 litre G4KJ (Theta II GDI)
  • Diesel models: 2.0 litre R-series CRDi

The code is stamped on the block and printed on the compliance plate. Our engine codes guide shows where to look. Get this right before you compare quotes, because two Sportages of the same year can have completely different engines.

These are indicative figures for a reconditioned engine. Fitted figures include removal of the old engine, transfer of ancillaries, fitting, fluids and a road test at our Dandenong workshop. Every job is quoted against the VIN, so treat these as the realistic range rather than a fixed price.

What pushes the price up

  • Ancillaries that did not survive. A bearing failure can send metal through the oil cooler and turbo feed lines. Anything contaminated has to be replaced or the new engine fails the same way.
  • The cause of the original failure. A blocked oil pick-up, failed PCV system or cooling fault needs fixing as part of the job.
  • GDI extras. High-pressure fuel pump and injectors transfer across; if they are worn it shows up after the swap.
  • Where the car is. Towing to the workshop, or freight if the engine is going to your own mechanic interstate.

Reconditioned, used or new: what is the difference in cost?

A used engine from a wrecker is the cheapest up front, but it comes with unknown kilometres and the same design weaknesses as the one that just failed. A brand-new engine from a dealer is the most expensive option and is often more than an older Sportage is worth. A reconditioned engine sits in between: stripped, machined, rebuilt with new wear parts and tested, with a 12-month warranty. Our guide to reconditioned vs second-hand engines covers the trade-offs.

Check the class action before you pay

Petrol Sportage engines (G4KD, G4KE, G4NC, G4NA and G4KJ) are named in the Kia engine class action in the Federal Court, which was expanded in August 2026. If your engine has failed, read our Hyundai and Kia engine class action guide first, and keep your invoices and service history.

Symptoms that mean the engine is on the way out

Knocking from the bottom end, a flashing oil light, heavy oil use between services or metal in the oil all point the same way. Our Kia Sportage engine problems guide explains each symptom and what can still be repaired.

Kia Sportage engine cost FAQs

How much does it cost to replace a Kia Sportage engine in Australia?

A reconditioned Kia Sportage engine supplied and fitted commonly lands between $5,000 and $8,500 depending on the engine code and which ancillaries carry over. Supply only, our reconditioned Sportage engines are $4,200 (G4NC 2.0 GDI) and $5,999 (G4KJ 2.4 GDI) on a changeover basis.

Is it worth replacing the engine in a Kia Sportage?

Usually yes if the body, transmission and interior are sound. A 2016 to 2021 Sportage is still worth well over the cost of a reconditioned engine, so replacing the engine normally costs far less than replacing the car.

How long does a Sportage engine replacement take?

Typically two to three working days at our Dandenong workshop once the engine is on hand.

Is my Kia Sportage engine covered by the class action?

Petrol Sportage models with the G4KD, G4KE, G4NC, G4NA and G4KJ engines are named in the Kia engine class action. Diesel models are not currently included. See our class action guide.
