Hyundai & Kia Engine Codes Explained: G4NB, G4NC, G4KE, G4KJ, G4FJ, D4CB and More

Every Hyundai and Kia engine carries a code: G4NC, G4KJ, D4CB and so on. It is stamped on the block, it appears on your compliance plate, and it is the single most reliable way to identify what is actually under your bonnet. Model year and badge are not enough, because Hyundai and Kia changed engines mid-model more than once, and the same body shape can carry two or three completely different engines depending on build date and variant.

If you are pricing a replacement engine, the code is the first thing we ask for. Here is what each one means, which cars they went into in Australia, and what tends to go wrong with them.

How to Read a Hyundai or Kia Engine Code

The codes follow a pattern once you know it.

First letter: G means petrol, D means diesel.

Number: the cylinder count. 4 for a four-cylinder, 6 for a V6.

Remaining letters: the engine family and variant. NC, KJ, FJ, CB and so on.

So G4NC reads as petrol, four cylinder, Nu family variant C. D4CB reads as diesel, four cylinder, CB family.

Where to Find Your Engine Number

There are three reliable places.

The compliance plate in the engine bay or door jamb usually lists the engine number, which begins with the engine code.

Stamped on the block itself. On most Hyundai and Kia four-cylinders it is on the rear of the block near the gearbox mating face, or on a machined pad on the side.

Your service records or registration papers in most Australian states list the engine number.

Take a photo of it. The code plus your VIN lets us confirm fitment properly rather than guessing from the badge.

The Nu Family: G4NB and G4NC

G4NB – 1.8L petrol, MPI. Fitted to the i30 GD and Elantra MD from around 2011 to 2017. Port injection rather than direct injection, which means it avoids the inlet valve carbon issues that affect the GDI engines. Generally a durable engine. When they fail it is usually oil-related: extended service intervals, low oil level running, or a neglected timing chain tensioner.

G4NC – 2.0L petrol, GDI. The most common engine we handle. It went into an enormous range of vehicles from roughly 2013 onward: i30, i40, ix35, Tucson TL, Elantra, Kia Cerato, Kia Sportage QL and Kia Rondo. Direct injection means no fuel washes over the inlet valves, so carbon build-up on the valves and ports is the characteristic long-term issue, along with oil consumption in higher-kilometre examples.

The Theta II Family: G4KD, G4KE and G4KJ

This is the 2.0 and 2.4 litre four-cylinder family, and it is the one that generated the most attention worldwide.

G4KD – 2.0L petrol, MPI. Found in the earlier ix35 LM and Tucson. Port injected. We supply the ix35 G4KD engine.

G4KE – 2.4L petrol, MPI. The port-injected 2.4, fitted to the ix35, Santa Fe, Kia Sportage SL and others from around 2009. This is the engine most associated with bearing wear and the knocking that precedes it. We have a dedicated guide to G4KE engine problems, and supply the ix35 G4KE engine.

G4KJ – 2.4L petrol, GDI. The direct-injection 2.4, used in the Santa Fe DM, Kia Optima JF, Kia Sportage QL and ix35. Same bottom-end vulnerability as the G4KE, plus GDI carbon deposits. Our range covers the Santa Fe, Kia Optima, Kia Sportage 2015-2021 and ix35.

The Gamma Family: G4FJ

G4FJ – 1.6L turbo petrol, T-GDI. The turbocharged 1.6 fitted to the i30 SR and N Line, Veloster Turbo, Tucson TL 1.6T and Kona. A strong engine driven properly, but it is turbocharged and direct injected, which makes it less forgiving of poor oil quality and extended intervals than the naturally aspirated engines. Turbo bearing feed restriction from oil coking is the classic failure path.

The iLoad and iMax Engines: G4KG and D4CB

Commercial vans work harder than passenger cars, and their engines show it.

G4KG – 2.4L petrol. The petrol iLoad and iMax engine, TQ series, roughly 2007 to 2018. We supply the G4KG iLoad and iMax petrol engine.

D4CB – 2.5L CRDi turbo diesel. The engine in most iLoad and iMax vans on Australian roads. High-kilometre commercial use, stop-start delivery work and deferred servicing take a heavy toll. Typical issues are turbo failure, injector problems, and bottom-end wear on vans that have done serious distance.

The Lambda V6: G6DH

G6DH – 3.3L V6 petrol, GDI. Fitted to the Kia Carnival YP and larger Hyundai models. A robust engine overall, but a big one to work on, and the labour content of a replacement is higher than a four-cylinder. Why the Code Matters More Than the Model

Two examples make the point.

A 2015 Kia Sportage QL could have a G4NC 2.0 GDI or a G4KJ 2.4 GDI. Different displacement, different mounts, different wiring, different ECU calibration. Ordering by “2015 Sportage” alone is how people end up with an engine that will not fit.

An ix35 could carry a G4KD, a G4KE, a G4KJ or a G4NC depending on year and variant. Four possibilities in one model line.

This is why we ask for the engine number and VIN before quoting, and why we check fitment rather than relying on the year. It takes a minute and it eliminates the single most expensive mistake in engine replacement.
