The Kia Cerato uses the same Hyundai-Kia engine families as the i30 and Elantra, so the problems and the fixes are ones we deal with every week. The TD (2009–2013) ran the Theta II G4KD 2.0L; the YD (2013–2016) moved to the Nu G4NB 1.8L in the S and Si and the G4NC 2.0L GDI in the SLi and Koup; the 2016 facelift and the BD (2018 on) use the G4NA 2.0L MPI.
We keep the reconditioned G4NC 2.0 GDI in stock and rebuild the G4NB 1.8 and G4KD 2.0 to order. Each engine is rebuilt with new wear components, tested, and sold with a 12-month product warranty, supply only or fitted at our Dandenong workshop.

Which engine is in my Kia Cerato?
The engine code is on the build plate under the bonnet and stamped on the block. Years are a guide; the VIN confirms it.

How we recondition a Kia Cerato engine
Reconditioned means rebuilt and tested, not cleaned and resold. This is the process every engine on this page goes through.
- Strip and inspectThe engine is fully dismantled, cleaned and measured. Cracked blocks and heads are rejected, not repaired.
- MachineBores honed or re-sleeved, crank ground or polished, head faced and pressure tested, valves and seats cut.
- New wear componentsBearings, rings, seals, gaskets, timing chain, guides and tensioner replaced with new parts. Oil pump and water pump checked or replaced.
- Assemble to specBuilt to factory clearances and torque settings by technicians who only work on Hyundai and Kia engines.
- TestCompression and leak-down tested before dispatch, so the engine leaves proven, not assumed.
- Warranty and support12-month product warranty, with fitment and installation advice for your mechanic by phone.
The engine is supplied as a long engine: block, crank, rods, pistons, head and timing components. Alternator, starter, manifolds, turbo (where fitted) and sensors transfer from your old engine. Read reconditioned vs second-hand engines and what the warranty covers.

Is it the engine? Kia Cerato engine problems
Cerato engines fail the same way their Hyundai twins do. The Nu G4NB and G4NC use oil, then the bearings run dry and knock; the G4NC adds carbon build-up on the intake valves that shows up as a rough idle and misfire codes. The TD’s G4KD is a Theta II with the same bottom-end weakness as the ix35. A knock on cold start means the bearings are already gone and a reconditioned engine is the sensible fix.
