The Hyundai Kona has been one of Australia’s most popular small SUVs since it landed in 2017, and most examples give little trouble. But the two petrol engines fitted to first-generation cars — the 2.0-litre MPi four-cylinder and the 1.6-litre T-GDI turbo — each have well-documented weak points that show up as the kilometres climb. This guide covers the problems we see on Konas, what the repairs typically cost, and when replacing the engine outright is the smarter call.
Which Engine Is in Your Kona?
Australian first-generation Konas (2017–2023) came with either the 2.0-litre MPi petrol (the G4NA, in Active and Elite grades) or the 1.6-litre turbo GDI (the G4FJ, in higher grades and N-Line) — the same 1.6 turbo family fitted to the Veloster and Tucson. The engine code is stamped on the block and printed on the build plate; if you are unsure which engine you have, we can confirm it from your VIN or registration.
Common 2.0 MPi (G4NA) Problems
- Oil consumption. The most common complaint. Piston ring wear can let oil consumption creep up gradually — many owners only notice when the level is low between services. Left unchecked, low oil accelerates bearing wear. If your Kona is using oil, check the level fortnightly and keep records.
- Bottom-end knock. A deep knock that rises with engine speed usually points to worn big-end bearings. This family of engines has been the subject of extensive warranty programs overseas for bearing-related failures, so treat any knock seriously and stop driving — our guide on driving with a knocking engine explains why.
- Rough running and misfires. Often ignition coils or carbon on the intake valves; worth eliminating before assuming the worst.
Common 1.6 T-GDI (G4FJ) Problems
The 1.6 turbo is a strong engine, but as a direct-injection turbo unit it shares the traits we cover in detail in our G4FJ engine problems guide: carbon build-up on the intake valves, ignition coils that fail around 100,000 km, wastegate rattle, and — on hard-driven or poorly serviced cars — turbo and bearing wear. Short-trip city driving accelerates the carbon issue, which shows up as cold-start stumble and lazy throttle response.
What Repairs Typically Cost
- Ignition coils and plugs: a few hundred dollars
- Intake carbon clean (walnut blasting): $400–$900
- Timing chain kit (if rattly): $1,200–$2,500
- Engine rebuild (worn rings or bearings): $4,000–$7,000 depending on damage
- Reconditioned exchange engine, supplied and fitted: typically $4,500–$7,500
The pattern we see constantly: once a G4NA is knocking or burning serious oil, piecemeal repairs stop making financial sense. Bearing damage usually means the crankshaft needs machining, and by the time the bottom end is apart you are most of the way to a full rebuild anyway. That is the point where a reconditioned engine — fully stripped, machined, rebuilt with new wear components and tested — becomes the more economical path, and it carries our 12-month warranty.
Check for Outstanding Recalls First
Before paying for any major engine work, run your VIN through Hyundai’s recall checker. Repair, Rebuild or Replace?
If the problem is sensors, coils or carbon, fix and drive on. If the bottom end is compromised, weigh the vehicle’s value against the cost of a proper fix. For most Konas — still young, still worth good money — a reconditioned engine supplied and fitted is the sweet spot: the car is typically back on the road in 2–3 days with a fresh engine and warranty.
