The short answer: in Australia, a reconditioned Hyundai Tucson engine supplied and fitted commonly costs between $4,800 and $7,500. The 2.0 GDI sits at the lower end and the 1.6 turbo at the upper end. What pushes the price up
- Metal through the oil system. After a bearing failure the oil cooler, and on the 1.6 turbo the turbocharger and its feed lines, need to be replaced or properly cleaned.
- The turbo itself. On the G4FJ the turbo transfers from your old engine. If it is worn, replacing it adds to the job.
- The cause of the failure. Cooling faults, a blocked PCV system or fuel dilution need fixing or the replacement engine is at risk.
- Location. Towing to the workshop, or freight if your own mechanic is fitting the engine interstate.
Check recalls and the class action first
Hyundai recall 21D150 covers 2014-2017 TL Tucson vehicles with the 2.0 MPI engine, and recall repairs are done by dealers at no charge. Check your VIN using the steps in our Hyundai and Kia recalls guide. The Tucson TL 2.0 GDI and 1.6 turbo are also named in the Hyundai engine class action, expanded in August 2026 — see our class action guide and keep your invoices and service history.
Repair, rebuild or replace?
If the engine is using oil but has not knocked, a repair or rebuild may still be on the table. Once a bearing has spun, a reconditioned exchange engine is usually quicker and more predictable. Our Hyundai Tucson engine problems guide covers the symptoms, and rebuild vs replacement covers the decision.
Hyundai Tucson engine cost FAQs
How much does it cost to replace a Hyundai Tucson engine in Australia?
A reconditioned Hyundai Tucson engine supplied and fitted commonly lands between $4,800 and $7,500 depending on the engine. Supply only, our reconditioned Tucson engines are $4,200 (G4NC 2.0 GDI) and $5,999 (G4FJ 1.6 turbo) on a changeover basis.
Is it worth replacing the engine in a Hyundai Tucson?
Usually yes if the rest of the car is sound. A 2015 to 2021 Tucson is worth well over the cost of a reconditioned engine, so an engine replacement normally costs far less than changing cars.
Is my Tucson covered by a recall or the class action?
Recall 21D150 covers 2014-2017 TL Tucson models with the 2.0 MPI engine, and the TL Tucson 2.0 GDI (G4NC) and 1.6 turbo (G4FJ) are named in the Hyundai engine class action. Check your VIN on the Hyundai recall page, and read our class action guide.
How long does a Tucson engine replacement take?
Typically two to three working days at our Dandenong workshop once the engine is on hand.
